Beast of Buckingham Palace by David Walliams

As entertaining as normal.

It's set in the future but also strangely medeival. The usual Walliams tropes are all here but this one had added onomatopoeic (yes, I googled the spelling of this) tourettes and it was incredibly irritating.

Do I recommend it? I mean, I don't know. I guess if you're 9. I like a lot of children's fiction but I'm not a massive fan of DW's books. Or his comedy come to think of it. Or his judging work either really.

    This was an incredibly frustrating book. I wanted to love it but it was just too unsatisfactory. It is set in Lagos, Korede is a nurse and her sister is .... well... a serial killer. Korede helps her clean up after the killings and cover up what she's done. I mean the premise sounds great, right? Or at least like it might make for some amusing shenanigans. But no. It just somehow fails to raise more than a vague (very) occasional smirk. Ayoola, the sister, is just the most unsympathetic and unlikeable character. Yes, yes... she's a serial killer, they're not known for their jovial friendly personalities. But there's nothing there. She's just vapid and self-centred, no idea of or care about the effect of her behaviour on anyone else around her. How to Murder Your Family by Bella Mackie

  If I was the writer of Kind Hearts and Coronets, I'd have read the beginning of this and reached for my phone to give my lawyer some very firm instructions. But then my hand would have hovered two inches above the phone as I  got a couple of pages in. My hand would gradually edge further away from the handset as I turn to the next page and the next ... slowly withdrawing as engrossment settles in. I mean, the story is very, very similar. The premise is exactly the same. Long ignored and unacknowledged child of super-rich man plots revenge on family and plans for inheritance. The inheritance isn't her main motive, revenge on the evil father is. But it's done really well, gets you hooked right from the off. Grace's mother had a short relationship with Simon Artemis a super-rich man but, when she gets pregnant, The Evil Impregnator is no longer interested and returns to his wife. Sick Puppy by Carl Hiaasen

  I'd never heard of the book or the author, but it was on my reading pile, it's bright green so it kept catching my eye, and it has a cute puppy on the front so, naturally, I gave it a go. And I was happily surprised.  It's about an ever-so-slightly unhinged young man who is on an environmental crusade. He sees someone throw his litter out of the car window on the highway and follows him in order to teach him a lesson. However, the litterbug turns out to be a big-time fixer working on a housing development project which is going to wipe out a nature reserve island. This, clearly, requires greater action. So, he (the unhinged young man) steals his (the litterbug fixer) dog and this leads to one of my favourite ever passages, as follows: " The dog was having a grand time.
