So, I decided to review everything I read this year....

..... actually, I just decided to write down everything I read this year.  I don't really know why. I think I just wanted to remember what I read as I never do. So I got myself a notepad and started writing down each title as I finished it. But then I started writing what I thought of them too. And then I thought, shall I share this?

And here I am..... Don't expect anything too insightful, I'm no writer myself, there'll be a lot of "I loved this" and I will attempt to explain why .... no promises though.

PS, I do promise not to have spoilers though!

Elias Cannetti is the kind of writer that makes me realise I will never be a writer. I mean, to be fair to myself he is a Nobel prize winning writer so he's pretty much top of his game so I like to think it's an unfair comparison but the way he writes about what he sees and how those things make him feel is just stunning.   If I was the writer of Kind Hearts and Coronets, I'd have read the beginning of this and reached for my phone to give my lawyer some very firm instructions. But then my hand would have hovered two inches above the phone as I  got a couple of pages in. My hand would gradually edge further away from the handset as I turn to the next page and the next ... slowly withdrawing as engrossment settles in. I mean, the story is very, very similar. The premise is exactly the same. Long ignored and unacknowledged child of super-rich man plots revenge on family and plans for inheritance. The inheritance isn't her main motive, revenge on the evil father is. But it's done really well, gets you hooked right from the off. Grace's mother had a short relationship with Simon Artemis a super-rich man but, when she gets pregnant, The Evil Impregnator is no longer interested and returns to his wife. Big Sky by Kate Atkinson

    This is my first Jackson Brodie experience, book or tv. And, to be honest, I'm left a tiny bit confused. Ok, so I enjoyed it. As a stand alone novel, it was fine. So, am I right in thinking that Jackson Brodie is a detective who does detecting? Only, because, he doesn't in this book. At all. He's sort of involved by accident and coincidence. And that's it. He's like a sideline character in a series of events. I thought it would be darker too. Which is weird given it's about a sex trafficking gang. I can't 100% pinpoint this feeling, when I think back on it. It's not like they characters were all rolling in the aisles with joviality but somehow they just didn't feel dark or threatening either. Quick summary - Vince, Stephen, Andy and Tommy are friends. Stephen, Andy and Tommy traffic girls from around the world and sell them to sex gangs. They have ties to an old sex-gang of the rich and powerful, the ringleaders of which are now in jail but dying...
