Jolly Foul Play - Robin Stevens

 


This is part of the Murder Most Unladylike series. The fourth in the series. 

Ok .... this is a kids book. I can't pretend otherwise! Agatha Christie for kids. I got the first one for Grace and we read it together and now I nag her to get on with it so I can read them! In fact this one, I took off her because she was taking too long.

Hazel Wong, the narrator of the story, is Dr Watson to Daisy Wells' Sherlock. Except, Hazel does an awful lot of Sherlocking too. She's by far the most interesting of the two characters as well.

These books are always fun to read and have a proper whodunnit feel with the reveal you want at the end. 

This one has an added message about bullying and pressure on children. The school bully / Head Girl gets wallopped round the head with a rake but she's so disliked by so many it's hard to narrow down the suspects .... especially when Daisy isn't talking to Hazel because she's keeping secrets. I think this is me trying to make it sound deeper than it is!

Highly recommend no matter how old you are!

    This was an incredibly frustrating book. I wanted to love it but it was just too unsatisfactory. It is set in Lagos, Korede is a nurse and her sister is .... well... a serial killer. Korede helps her clean up after the killings and cover up what she's done. I mean the premise sounds great, right? Or at least like it might make for some amusing shenanigans. But no. It just somehow fails to raise more than a vague (very) occasional smirk. Ayoola, the sister, is just the most unsympathetic and unlikeable character. Yes, yes... she's a serial killer, they're not known for their jovial friendly personalities. But there's nothing there. She's just vapid and self-centred, no idea of or care about the effect of her behaviour on anyone else around her. Kololo Hill by Neema Shah

   I had this one as an audio book. I actually downloaded it by mistke. I thought I was just clicking on "info". But I'm really, very glad I did. It's starts in Uganda under the rule of Idi Amin. I don't really know a huge amount about that time in Uganda or Idi Amin. I think I remember him dying, or losing power, but I was 6 in 1979 so maybe not! My only other real knowledge is from the film The Last King of Scotland, which is excellent, by the way. Highly recommend. Anyway, the story follows a fairly well-off middle class Asian family after Idi Amin announces that all Asians (non-Ugandans?) were to be expelled.  It starts with their fear, disbelief and uncertainty, only the oldest generations having ever lived anywhere else. The Talk of Pram Town by Joanna Nadin

The story of the Earnshaw/Holiday family.  The story follows the three generations of the Earnshaw family.  Jean, grandmother/mother. Extremely snobby, very prim. estranged from daughter ... Connie, daughter/mother. Connie dies right at the beginning of the book but the story of her growing up is told in flashbacks. Pushing against her boring mother, trying to escape until she finally runs away after finding out that she is pregnant with... Sadie, daughter/granddaughter. Adored by her mother, Connie, forced to go and live with her grandparents when she dies. Determined to find out who her father is. There's a lot of emotion in this book but, strangely, very little of it is grief. It's sort of there, underlying, but this isn't a book about dealing with death.
